Start: Encounter a Challenge

  • Question: Are you facing a potential issue? (e.g., weather change, fatigue, gear issue, trail block)

    • No: Continue hiking—keep checking in hourly (body, gear, conditions).

    • Yes: Go to Step 1.

Step 1: Assess the Situation

  • Action: Pause for a quick check-in.

  • Question: Is this a minor issue (e.g., tired legs, slight drizzle) or a major risk (e.g., storm, injury, lost)?

    • Minor: Go to Step 2.

    • Major: Go to Step 3.

Step 2: Handle Minor Issues

  • Question: Can you recharge and proceed?

    • Yes: Take a 5-minute break—hydrate, eat, breathe—then continue with adjustments (e.g., slow pace, add layers).

      • Return to Start and monitor.

    • No: Go to Step 3.

Step 3: Evaluate Major Risks

  • Action: Use your senses and notes—check weather, trail signs, or gear status.

  • Question: Is this manageable with your plan? (e.g., reroute around blockage, fix gear with backup tools)

    • Yes: Adapt your plan—reroute, repair, or adjust goals—then proceed cautiously.

      • Return to Start and monitor.

    • No: Go to Step 4.

Step 4: Contingency Mode

  • Question: Can you bail out safely? (Check exit options from your notes)

    • Yes: Take nearest exit (trail, road)—head out and notify your contact.

      • End: Safe exit, reflect post-trip.

    • No: Shelter in place—set up camp, conserve energy, signal if needed (whistle, bright gear).

      • End: Wait for conditions to improve or help to arrive, reflect post-trip.
