The Backpacker's Ten

Step 1: Are You Packing for a Trip?

Yes → Proceed to Step 2.

No → No immediate action needed, but regular gear maintenance is recommended.


Step 2: Is Your Gear Organized and Balanced?

Yes → Proceed to Step 3.

No → Adjust pack weight (heavy items centered, essentials accessible, straps secured). Use dry bags or stuff sacks for organization.


Step 3: Have You Secured and Protected Your Gear?

Yes → Proceed to Step 4.

No → Take steps to waterproof gear, secure loose items, and label critical gear.


Step 4: Are You in a Camp or Shelter?

Yes → Proceed to Step 5.

No → Proceed to Step 6.


Step 5: How Are You Securing Your Gear at Camp?

In a high-traffic area? → Keep valuables on your person, secure items inside a pack or locker.

In a remote area? → Protect food and scented items from wildlife, store loose gear properly.

Camp Security Check: Is all gear accounted for and protected from theft and wildlife?


Step 6: Are You Actively Hiking or Moving?

Yes → Proceed to Step 7.

No → If resting, ensure gear is within sight and valuables are secure.


Step 7: Is Your Gear at Risk While Hiking?

Yes → Check for loose straps, ensure electronics are protected, and balance pack load.

No → Proceed confidently but remain aware of gear condition.


Step 8: Are You Facing an Emergency or Gear Loss?

Yes → Proceed to Step 9.

No → Continue securing gear as needed and reassess periodically.
